Mutual Funds
If you are looking to invest for the long term, mutual funds are a foundation for a well diversified portfolio. A mutual fund is a company that pools money from many investors and invests the money in stocks, bonds, short-term money-market instruments, other securities or assets, or some combination of these investments. The combined holdings the mutual fund owns are known as its portfolio.
Variable Annuities
This product combines the features of mutual funds and an insurance contract. Variable annuities are long term investments that offer tax deferral and a variety of income options at retirement, like monthly or lump sum disbursements. Variable annuities can be an excellent tax-deferred way to save for retirement along with IRAs and 401k plans.
Stocks
Stocks represent ownership in a publicly traded company. Your investment will rise and fall with the value of the stock price of the company. Stocks carry more risk than money market or bond investments, but over the long term, stocks have delivered higher returns.
Bonds
A bond is an "IOU" for money loaned to a company. It represents a promise to return the money at a set maturity date and pay regular interest payments along the way. Bonds are issued by companies, governments and municipalities. They can pay taxable interest or provide tax free benefits.
Closed-End Funds
A closed-end fund is an investment company that issues a fixed number of shares which trade on a stock exchange or in the over-the-counter market. Assets of a closed-end fund are professionally managed in accordance with the fund's investment objective and policies, and may be invested in stocks, bonds, or a combination of both. Like other publicly traded securities, the market price of closed-end fund shares fluctuates and is determined by supply and demand in the marketplace.
Unit Investment Trusts (UITs)
A Unit Investment Trust may be a cost effective way for investors seeking current income or capital appreciation to invest in stocks and bonds. UITs buy and hold a fixed, diversified basket of stocks, bonds or other securities. The "units" in the trust are sold to investors. Investors receive a share of principal and any interest or dividends. Unlike mutual funds, UITs terminate on a predetermined date. At termination, investors receive their proportionate share of the UIT net assets.
